These strategies, freely available in our database, are not only examined one by one, but are also combined and explored as a cohesive composite strategy. In partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/mesosim.deltaray.io\/?affCode=7e647b5e-1c80-4423-8fbc-470bab01a1c1\">Deltaray, using MesoSim \u2014 an options strategy simulator known for its unique flexibility and performance<\/a>[5] \u2014 we decided to explore and quantify how our Seasonal Strategy performs when applied to options trading. Our motivation is to investigate whether this strategy can be improved in terms of risk and return. We aim to systematically harvest the VRP (<a href=\"https:\/\/\\\/\\\/new-fmhwbzh6ghd9hede.swedencentral-01.azurewebsites.net\/strategies\/volatility-risk-premium-effect\/\">volatility risk premium<\/a>) timing the entries using calendar strategy to avoid historically negative trading days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the following sections, we will briefly discuss academic studies in the area of calendar anomalies, we then describe the data preparation process and the four steps involved in developing our final strategy.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Relationship to Literature <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As early as 1962, Osborne observed an interesting weekly pattern: U.S. stock markets experience significantly lower returns on Mondays and higher returns on Fridays compared to other weekdays[6]. Investors have been keen on exploiting similar temporal anomalies ever since. Building on this, the <strong>January Effect<\/strong>, documented by Rozeff and Kinney in 1976, shows that returns in January are unusually high compared to other months[7]. Further expanding on monthly trends, Ariel highlighted the <strong>Turn-of-the-Month Effect<\/strong>, where the end of one month and the start of the next typically see higher returns, suggesting an optimal strategy of buying SPY ETFs at month&#8217;s end and selling at the beginning of the next[2]. <strong>The Payday Effect<\/strong>, similar to the Turn of the Month, is triggered around typical payday schedules, particularly on the 15th and at month-end, when employees often invest their paychecks[4]. This offers another profitable opportunity to buy SPY ETFs on these days and sell them shortly after. Additionally, the market exhibits predictable patterns around specific events such as <strong>Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings<\/strong>, where the S&amp;P 500 generally performs better, possibly in reaction to the Federal Reserve\u2019s decisions aimed at stabilizing and enhancing the economy[9]. By purchasing SPY ETFs the day before an FOMC meeting and selling them afterward, investors can capitalize on the market&#8217;s typically positive response. Another trading window is the <strong>Option-Expiration Week Effect<\/strong>, observed during the week leading up to the regular expiration of options\u2014the Friday before the third Saturday of each month. During this period, stocks with large market capitalizations and active options trading tend to yield higher returns[8].<\/p>\n<p>These patterns are just a few examples of the many calendar effects observed globally, which range from those related to the Islamic calendar[1] to events like the FIFA World Cup[3]. Each highlights potential inefficiencies in market behavior. Such effects significantly shape our modern trading strategies. Through our collaboration with Deltaray, we explore these anomalies to develop strategies that could lead to better risk-adjusted returns with focus on options trading.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Data Preparation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>First, we created a Google Sheet for our data, where each row represents a date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Column A<\/strong> includes dates within the backtest time range, each marked with a 9:30 AM timestamp. This timing ensures that MesoSim can use the data on the same day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Column B<\/strong> tracks when regular options expire. We use a formula that checks if the date in Column A is the third Friday of the month. Third Friday of the month is when these options typically expire. If there is a match, the date is marked with a &#8216;1&#8217;. Formula runs as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em>=if(date(Year(A2), month(A2), day(A2)) = (DATE(YEAR(A2),MONTH(A2),1+7*3)-<\/em><br><em>WEEKDAY(DATE(YEAR(A2),MONTH(A2),8-6))), 1, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This formula calculates if the given date aligns with the third Friday by subtracting the weekday number of the second day of the month from the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Column C<\/strong>, the &#8216;option expiration week&#8217;, calculates and marks the whole week leading up to each expiration date using the formula:<\/p>\n<p><em>=if(countif(B2:B6, &#8220;=1&#8221;) &gt; 0, 1, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If there is a cell in a given range that contains &#8216;1&#8217;, it means that the week includes an option expiration day. Any week containing an expiration date is marked with a &#8216;1&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Column D<\/strong>, the &#8216;option expiration week start&#8217;, signals when the expiration week starts. This happens when the marks in Column C change from&nbsp; &#8216;0&#8217; (no expiration week) to &#8216;1&#8217; (start of expiration week) between two rows. This column will be used by MesoSim to trigger trades Formula:<\/p>\n<p><em>=if(and(C2 &lt;&gt; C1, C2 = 1), 1, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To see when one month changes to the next, we create a <strong>Column E<\/strong> &#8216;end of the month&#8217; using the formula:<\/p>\n<p><em>=if(month(A2) &lt;&gt; month(A3), 1, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This checks if the month of the current row is different from the next and marks the transition with a &#8216;1&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the end-of-month period is already covered by the Turn of the month represented by Column E, we also marked the mid-month payday, happening around the 15<sup>th<\/sup> in <strong>Column G<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>=if(day(A2) = 15, 1, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Column F<\/strong> includes the dates of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meetings. Each step will be described in detail.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Step 1: Synthetic Long using Options<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In our original paper and backtest we use SPY ETF. As MesoSim is an option-only backtester, they use a synthetic long position on SPX to match the SPY-based investment strategy. Synthetic Long consists of simultaneously Buying a Call Option ATM and Selling a Put Option ATM. To avoid selling tail risk we target contracts with Delta=10.
